In Praise of Keeping

Emerson saw it long before the feed did. We scroll past our own convictions daily, dressed in someone else’s words.

In every work of genius we recognize our own rejected thoughts; they come back to us with a certain alienated majesty.

That is what a good archive does. It hands your thoughts back to you, a little strange, a little majestic.

Emerson kept journals for sixty years and indexed them by hand, so no thought, once caught, could slip away again. He called them his savings bank.

The trick was never volume. It was the return visit: a line read twice, a year apart, and understood differently the second time.

So keep the ones that stop you. Not the whole feed, not every clever thing, only what you would want handed back to you later, when you have become someone slightly different.
